Merely clearing the cut-off hurdle at St Stephen's College is not enough. For those who have made it through the first test to grab a coveted seat in the college, what lies ahead is something that is considered the toughest part of the admission process here -- the interview.

Monday saw the first round of interviews at Stephen's and the students who were "grilled" had many interesting tales to tell. "I went for the Economics Honours interview and they asked me why I was applying to Stephen's and what my other preferences were. Then the interviewers started grilling me on why I thought Stephen's was a good college.

I didn't know what to say to that. I mean, everyone knows it's the best college and I had no clue what they wanted me to say,"said Monica Rawat. For those of you who are gearing up to crack the interview code at the college in the coming days, here's a piece of advice from Stephen's principal Valson Thampu. "What basically counts is the student's understanding of the subject he/she wants to pursue and his/her personality. You can't do a crash course for an interview or learn some formulas to ace it. You have to be sure of yourself and be comfortable in your skin. When deciding on a prospective candidate, what matters is his/her aptitude for the subject, general awareness, and, of course, the applicants general outlook in life."

But don't let the `I' word give you cold feet and sweaty palms. Seniors who have gone through the "grilling" session say what's important is to keep it simple and be yourself.

Krishnan, who passed out of Stephen's last year, said: "There is no need to butter up the inter viewers! Never make up stories about anything and say what you feel and think. Just remember you need to connect with them. Don't think of it as a test, but as any other conversation you're having." He said questions such as " What is the colour of the wall behind you?" and " How many steps did you climb to reach the interview room?" are all old tricks in the book. Krishnan also felt that students applying for Arts courses are grilled more, while the science aspirants are asked course- related questions . While you can be sure of whether your marks will help you clear the cut- offs or not, there is no certainty when it comes to interviews.

Arjit Walia, who has just graduated in English( H) from Ramjas College, shudders when he talks about his interview at Stephen's three years ago. " I cleared the Stephen's cut- off criterion but couldn't clear the interview.

After the basic personal details, the first question they asked me was which was the last book I read. That was pretty simple and I told them it was Wuthering Heights . It was when they asked me what I thought of Heathcliff's character and how it personified the story that I was caught off guard." Dhruv Kumar, a third- year student at Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies, was asked why he was wearing a tie.

" I wonder what they did to those who were wearing shorts!"
