With a BDS degree, you can set up private practice, teach or join government service. You can also specialise by doing a two-year MDS (Master of dental surgery) programme in different aspects of dentistry. There are several specialisations after BDS, such as orthodontics which involves proper alignment of face and teeth and correction of deformities; periodontics -- a specialisation in the care of gums and diseases; operative dentistry which is about root canal jobs, fillings and cosmetic surgery; prosthodontics, involving the making of artificial teeth, particularly artificial dentures for the old and injured, and several other specialisations for which there is now greater awareness and scope for practice. Over a hundred dental colleges offer various specialisations. Unfortunately, each college has barely two-three seats per specialisation.

Alternative options in related healthcare areas are hospital or healthcare management.

There is a growing demand for this specialisation. You can also consider working with medical business process outsourcing (BPO) organisations. Four outsourcing companies: TCS, Wipro, Cognizant and HCL are hiring doctors, dentists, nurses and paramedics for BPO work. Another new field is clinical research, which is growing worldwide.

Moreover, India is increasingly being recognised as a quality player in global clinical trials. Career prospects in the clinical research industry include working as a clinical investigator or research associate at a hospital conducting clinical investigations or in a clinical research organisation.

Jobs are also available in the pharmaceutical sector.

Pharmacy, physiotherapy and other paramedical fields, too, are possible options. Finally, you can consider an MBA programme to get into healthcare management or general management. Much depends on your areas of interest and your skill set.
