The Delhi University's New Year gift for its students is still in the pipeline at the Institute of Life Long Learning (ILLL).

ILLL Director A K Bakshi and team would not commit to a delivery date; but the gift ILLL e-learning portal is worth waiting for.

"We're in the process of speeding up our activities. An attractive incentive scheme for teachers, who generate content on time, is on the cards," said Bakshi.

"We have, however, decided that the portal should go online soon, regardless of the amount of content we have at hand. The ILLL and its contributors will regularly add new material," he added. The institute's e-learning portal, which eventually will cover all courses offered by the university, currently has four main sections e-quizzes, e-labs, e-lessons and e-lectures.

Another major roadblock limited bandwidth will be removed with the university upgrading the current 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps by June this year.

The ILLL team is excited about e-quizzes. Nearly 7,000 questions covering the three years of various undergraduate programmes have already been uploaded on the site. Questions for the honours programmes are being prepared and 3,000 questions are currently undergoing fact-checking.

"Quizzes have been prepared unit-wise. After students take a test, they can know their marks along with the time taken for the test," said Bakshi.

E-labs, with sections for pre-lab, in-lab and post-lab preparations, use animations extensively to help students prepare for the actual experiment. The animations have been prepared with attention to the smallest detail. The institute is planning to replace the animations with real actors. E-lessons are the heart of the portal. Not only have the chapters been re-worked, but a number of "value-additions" have been thrown in.

"E-lessons will be richly illustrated, with hyperlinks leading to extra information on the topic. Special sections like `Did You Know', `Suggested Readings' and assignments will be added," said Bakshi.

A highlight for the elessons is that they will also feature Amitabh Bachchan.
The actor has given his consent for the portal to carry a two-minute audio clip of him reading his father and poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan's celebrated poem Madhushala.

The clip will be part of the Hindi section as the poem is part of the BA programme curriculum. The portal's e-lectures will have classes with some of the best teachers, like retired DU professor R W Desai's hour-long lecture on An Introduction to Othello.

The access to the portal may be limited to begin with.

The university, while accepting such material is too valuable to keep to itself, is likely to limit the access to students and faculty members.
